Figure?

Isla: “Criticism was useful to us”

After the matches with his national team, after the defeat in Parma, Udinese’s fans could finally look at Mauricio Isla as he was showing all his qualities. The Chilean has made a brilliant performance: running, hunger (??), speed, goal. “I wanted to make up for the poor figure (as in "brutta figura"?) in Parma – he says -. Criticism was right and it helped us growing ("to grow"?). I’m happy for the goal and for the win, our fans deserves ("deserve"?) it”.

What do you think of Abdi’s performance?
“He is a talented player, it’s not easy to play behind Totò, but he did so perfectly”.
What did the coach ask you before the match?
“To be mean. Roma are strong when possessing the ball”.
You’re going to France next…
“We’ll go there to play a good match and get the qualification”.

Naples...

Well, they may very well be perfect with their match against M. City, but as far as their English is concerned, hmm...

"Perfect Napoli and wonderful San Paolo". Paolo Cannavaro keeps in a few incisive words the shivering night in the match against Manchester. The captain said on Radio Marte his emotions are still alive ...

"A memorable match and an important victory. Football thankfully is not an exact science and we gave proof that with planning and intelligence you can get great results. They aren't enough money to win and often is more important a plan to go far. Against Manchester we were perfect, we had in front world champions but we were able to make the game in our way. It's a great result and shows how the group is growing. Mazzarri was quiet, too, he saw us full of energy and knew in his heart that we had a great performance, beyond the result".

"On Tuesday, the San Paolo was exceptional. Since years I'm in Napoli team but this stadium always astonishes me. When I went on field for the warm up I heard the roar from the enrty steps and it was an incredible shiver. Our audience is unique. If after our goal a Slovenian linesman speaks to me in Italian and tells me 'here you are crazy', it means that there isn't a public like this in the world. I thank them not only for the evening of Tuesday, but for these wonderful years in which we went up to the Champions League. I remember all the more exciting matches, from promotion to date. And our fans have supported us in this wonderful ride"

"But now let's enjoy the moment but look forward without exalt . It's lacking one day at the end of the round and we expect a tough match in Spain. We are facing teams that never give up and always have a winning mentality. It will be tough both for us against Villarreal and for Manchester against Bayern. It's everything to play"

Meanwhile, now there's Bergamo ... "Since today we'll think Atalanta. The hardest match is always what comes first. Saturday we will find an opponent in great condition which is the revelation of the season. It will be hard and we have to be at best to continue also in the championship on our way. The season is long and we want to live it as protagonists"

Guidolin: “Need to improve our away performances”

The defeat suffered in Parma stops the running (???) of Udinese at the top of the ranking. “I thought I had touched the right chord when preparing this match – Udinese’s coach says -, but we didn’t manage to express ourselves as we usually do. We knew we were not a team that could fight for the first places ("top places"?), we never thought differently. We have troubles (troubles? Like in Northern Ireland?) facing anybody when we don’t fight tooth and nail”.

Is there a different attitude between home and away matches? “I have to work hard so that my squad is the same one in home and away matches as it was last year. We actually performed better in away matches last year. We can’t underestimate this detail”.

Chicago Club and basketball?

From the November 7th, 2011 edition (p. 61) of La Repubblica and an article by Maria Pia Fusco on Alex Gibney's new movie, "Catching Hell".

The movie talks about a baseball fan, Steve Bartman, who disrupted a World Series match. Fusco mentions that the team involved in the 2003 match was the Chicago CLUB and that it was during the
BASKETBALL championship!

The article includes a picture. In the picture you can clearly see a glove and a baseball! The sport in fact IS baseball and the team is only the Chicago CUBS and NOT CLUB as Fusco sustains in her article!

The full story on what happened that day:

The nightmarish experience of Chicago Cubs fan Steve Bartman can happen to any fan. That's the sobering message of ESPN Films' new documentary, Catching Hell, that premiered Saturday at the Tribeca Film Festival in New York.

If you think there's nothing new to say about the infamous foul ball deflected by Bartman during Game 6 of the 2003 National League Championship Series at Wrigley Field, think again. This disturbing new documentary by Alex Gibney brilliantly captures the thin line between love and hate that beats in the heart of many sports fans. And the phenomenon of scapegoating.

With the Lovable Losers only five outs from the World Series, the film shows with crime scene-like detail how Bartman and other fans reached for a foul pop headed for the glove of Cubs outfielder Moises Alou. The ball deflected away -- sending Alou off into a tirade. The Florida Marlins came back to win Game 6. The fans at the "Friendly Confines" turned into an angry mob one eyewitness compares to the pitchfork-bearing villagers in Frankenstein. (Video after jump)

Bartman, a meek, bespectacled Little League coach, is showered with beer, curses and death threats. He's escorted away for his own protection. As he flees with a jacket over his head, one fan urges him to blow his own head off with a shotgun.

The film shows in minute detail how Bartman wasn't the only reaching for the ball. (Another fan got it and sold it for $100,000). Cubs shortstop Alex Gonzalez booted an easy grounder. The Cubs could still have won the decisive Game 7. But it was Bartman who had to be escorted from Wrigley in disguise to save him from furious fans.

Bartman, a lifelong Cubs fan, apologized in a written statement and asked fellow fans for forgiveness. Good luck with that. He's still called the most hated man in Chicago. His face adorns dart boards. One fan compared his "evil" to that of the September 11th hijackers. He stayed in the Chicago area but has lived as a semi-recluse ever since becoming, as one interviewee says, the "J.D. Salinger" of Chicago.

The saddest part? Out of everybody involved, from Alou who egged on fans with his reaction to Fox broadcaster Steve Lyons to the TV producers who showed his face over and over, Bartman's acted the most honorably. He's never tried to cash in on the incident although he's been offered hundreds of thousands of dollars to tell his story.

At the after-party, New York Giants tight end Kevin Boss said he just wanted to give Bartman "a hug" after watching the film. Gibney noted it would serve Chicago right if the Cubs threw a "Steve Bartman Day" and the man of honor decided not to show up.

Udinese and its figures!!!

04-11-2011

Guidolin: “Let’s forget Madrid and turn a new page”

Guidolin looks quite gloomy after the loss at the “Vicente Calderon”: “We are sorry we did a poor figure (???) in front of our fans – the coach says -. There are still two matches to be played, our qualification will be decided in the next 180 minutes. Our squad is very young, and the youth (??) has no experience. We were too shy on the pitch and we paid for it. We made several mistakes in the first half and got punished by Atletico Madrid. I’m not disappointed in the guys, my choices, my responsibility. Let’s forget about this poor figure (and what kind of "figure" would be better, a "figure 8" for example?), let’s turn a new page and focus on the championship, Siena are waiting for us in three days”.

Happy Birthday Damiano!

Udinese Calcio wish Damiano Ferronetti an

happy ("a happy"?) 27th birthday! Udinese’s defender – born in Albano Laziale on 01/11/1984 – proved to be a fundamental player in coach Guidolin’s squad.
Happy Birthday Damiano!
