Usually, foreign embassies throughout the world are located in a country’s capital. For example, Rome has the French, German, Canadian, American etc. embassies. In certain cities, there are consulates-general. Ditto for Paris, London, Washington, Buenos Aires etc. For example, Milan is home to several (such as the ones listed above). Embassies usually are NOT in cities which are NOT capitals.
But not so in Federico Rampini’s case, the journalist for Italy’s La Repubblica newspaper who June 27th while covering the G8 Summit in Canada spoke about the Black Bloc protesters and the way that they were holding under siege the city of Toronto, in particular “The U.S. Embassy” (p. 6).
Well, Rampini should know that while Toronto is the capital of Ontario, the capital of the nation is Ottawa, which is also located in Ontario. But it’s Ottawa that is home to the U.S. Emabssy, not Toronto (which by the way is instead home to the U.S. Consulate-General, as is also Montréal where I had worked in the late 1980s, not to mention the one in Winnipeg where I also worked in the 1980s)!
